Hughes harbours National dream Dessie Hughes could be mob-handed in the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree next April with the Curragh trainer targeting the showpiece with at least five of his charges. Old campaigners Black Apalachi and Vic Venturi, both successful in the past over the National fences in the Becher Chase, are still very much part of the Osborne Lodge team. Black Apalachi went closest to taking the four and a half mile marathon when runner-up to Don't Push It in 2010, while Hughes is also eyeing up the Liverpool spectacular for In Compliance, Rare Bob and perhaps Western Charmer. “It's a race I'd love to win and we're lucky to have a bunch of horses at the moment that are out and out stayers and good jumpers,” said Hughes. “In Compliance got stopped by fallers at Becher's in the National this year. He was late enough coming back in, like Black Apalachi, and will be aimed at Aintree. “Black Apalachi was unlucky in the race two year's ago when he unseated while leading at Becher's second time round. The National is his main target as he jumps so well, and the plan is to start him off in a hurdle race and then go for the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse. “I was very happy with the way Rare Bob jumped at Aintree last Saturday. The ground was just too soft for him. “Western Charmer stayed well when second in the Irish National, and he will start back at Punchestown on Sunday in a handicap chase (2m6f). He may run in the Paddy Power Chase at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting and we'll take it from there,” added Hughes.
