Flood strikes for Irish team in Australia

The Irish jockeys drew first blood in the Irish-Australian Jumps Challenge when Paddy Flood was successful aboard Demondo at Adelaide track Murray Bridge yesterday.

Flood rode the odds-on favourite to a length and a half win over Larry Hurley´s mount Cognac Fantasy in a 14-furlong maiden hurdle.

'It´s great to win on my first ride in Australia, unbelievable' said 18 year-old Flood, who is attached to Dessie Hughes´ Curragh stable, 'I was always travelling well and it was only a matter of when to let him go on.'

Demondo led before the second last for an easy success but Larry Hurley is hoping that Cognac Fantasy runs again before the series ends. 'I´d love to ride him again, that was his first run over hurdles.'

Robert Power finished a points-earning fourth and John Allen pulled up. With a healthy 20 pts to 4 pts advantage at this early stage, the team are in action at Morphettville tomorrow in a hurdle and a chase but there are only six runners declared for the chase and Paddy Flood has no ride now in that race.
