Friendless in the market all day, 25/1 chance Apprentice landed the three-year-old handicap under 7lb claimer Alan Persse.

Having tracked the leaders, the Mastercraftsman filly went in pursuit of Slaney Tide after the latter struck the front early in the straight. She needed all of the 1m1f trip to wear down that rival who was bidding to give Jim Bolger and Luke McAteer a double on the evening. A head was the margin of victory.

Winning trainer Mark Cahill said: “We gave her a chance, to be honest about it. She was working away well, and the drying ground helped. Last weekend, the way the ground was, I thought we had no chance.

"She’s a grand filly and will stay a little bit further.”
