50/1 shot Capeslew denies favourite Alkazim

Capeslew at 50/1 caused a major upset in the Irish Stallion Farms Median Auction Maiden getting the better the even money favourite Alkazim by half a length providing her jockey Gary Carroll with a double on the night.

The winning daughter of Cape Cross, who cost 28,000 guineas as a yearling, was making her racecourse debut tonight for her trainer Joe Murphy.

Alkazim, who had by far the strongest form coming into this race, hit the front two furlongs from home but couldn't maintain his lead as the winner kept on well inside the final furlong to nab him close home. Croi An Or finished a further half a length back in third at 20/1 on his debut for Tommy Stack.

Joe Murphy jnr, son of the winning trainer, said afterwards: “"She has always been a good filly. She was in the Moyglare but she kept growing so we took her out, she has been very immature.

"She is nicely bred and could possibly be better on grass from a mile to a mile and a quarter next year."
