Elegant Lass notches third win over hurdles
We were hoping for the same thing as last year (to win on reappearance) and it was a similar track to Bellewstown - flat and quick. She looked to get her own way in front today which was ideal and everything went really right and she jumped great. It is good to have her back, there aren't many of those Dandy Mans hurdling so to get the two miles over hurdles is great. She was very flighty and headstrong on the flat and wasn't getting home and we only went hurdling to try to get her to settle down. It has worked so well I think she'll stay over hurdles now.
Norman Lee's stable star wins Grimes Hurdle
To win our first Graded race is unreal and we are lucky to even have a horse to contest one, never mind win one. He is a credit to his owner and the lads at home. We thought he might be a little short today but every time we think that, he is still good enough and is always there. Paul gave him a great ride and went on the outer for the better ground. He has a high enough rating and while he didn't win by a lot, we will stay in graded company and think about a Galway Hurdle (fifth in the 2019 renewal). He shouldn't go up. We have a dozen horses in at home, he is our stable star and I don't think three miles worked at Grade 1 level the last day. Eventually next year we'll go for a Grade 1 race again but maybe he is a horse who will win Grade 2s and 3s but we'll keep dreaming with him. We are over the moon with him and Michael (Hogan, winning owner) is very important to him as horses like him are usually in big yards. We'll treat him like the star he is for us.
Smitty Bacall pops up at 20/1 for Shay Barry
In fairness to the handicapper, he dropped him down to a fair mark because he was off for a long time and I'm delighted. It was Danny's own idea to go on the outside. I was hoping they'd go plenty quick and told him to follow the pace, he stays well, but Danny said they slowed it up and he got it spot on as it took the sting out of the rest of them. There are two races, a hurdle and chase, for him at Killarney and he's a lovely horse to have.
Summer Tide does the business for Byrnes & Brouder
That's great to get off the mark over hurdles and the horse jumped very well for Kevin. They went a good honest gallop, he is honest and stays going. I'm delighted for my aunt Patricia (McCarthy) and it is fantastic to get a winner for her and it is her first horse. My uncle (Pat Byrnes) bought him as a foal and point-to-pointed him (runner-up in a 4-year-old maiden at Stowlin) and that's how we came across him. There is no plan after today, we'll see where he gets in.
Tucson Train scores for Tom & Danny Mullins
having the bit of room on the outside helps as he was tight turning for home at Punchestown and cowered out of it. He is a big horse who likes a bit of room. Flat tracks like this probably don't bring out the best in him but hopefully later in the month there might be a novice hurdle with a stiffer finish that could suit him.
Danny Mullins completes Tipperary treble
she is a savage mare and any time she was beaten it was my own fault. My daughter Gillian is a huge part of my team and loves this mare in particular. She is out at 10pm at night giving the horses extra feed and looking after them and also has a high profile job. She already has black-type and will win one of those good mares chases.
Butler's charge Steps up to the plate under Enright
I wasn't at Kilbeggan but it was a nice run. He was due his turn although you'd often be due a turn and it'd never come!. He might go for the same type of race, we'll see what the handicapper'll do. He could jump a fence as well and he ran in point-to-points. He likes the top of the ground.
