Le Richebourg impresses on hurdling debut
Walsh & McManus double-up with Time
Asthuria provides Ruby with birthday win
Green provides Mullins with feature race win
That was brilliant and it is my biggest winner as a trainer. He had been disappointing with his jumping ever since he got a fall in Punchestown earlier in the year. Thankfully after he ran the last day, Willie (Mullins, uncle) and I spoke in the stableyard and gave me advice and I listened. It worked the oracle thank god but we can't let everyone know the secret!. I'd imagine for the Mees (owners) it'll be straight to Galway and all roads lead to there. He could run in the Amateur Handicap there and after that might run in a hurdle race later in the week. David was brilliant on him and it was also his first ride for me.
Ask Nile makes winning chase debut
chasing is his (Ask Nile) game and is something to go on with. Good ground would probably suit him better but he has won on heavy ground in the past. He’ll get a small break now but I’m considering running him at Galway although he won’t run throughout the summer.
Mahon targets Galway Plate with Champagne
it’s easy talking about it after the event but I said a long time ago the long-term plan is the Galway Plate. These trainers are great when they win three weeks before Galway, and say they’re all heading to Galway, but I’m saying it a long time. He’s a work in progress and is a lazy horse but the ground would have been as lively as I would have liked. He’s a good actioned horse and will probably get another run, probably over hurdles, just to sharpen him up for the Plate.
Bandaged Mullins gets Outsider home in front
We knew he was in good form coming here but was afraid he might need the run. He ran well off a break last season and I was hoping he would do the same today. I thought Danny (Mullins) was excellent on him as he waited and waited and timed his run. Danny deserves big credit as he got a heavy fall in the first race (from Sunday At Augusta) and could have been stood down. He is all bandaged up on his face but is a hardy bit of stuff and I'm delighted he was on him as he gets a great tune out of him. He's a great little horse and that's his third win and there's a possibility he could mix hurdles and fences for the summer now. I'm delighted for the owners (Bayshaven Syndicate); John O'Brien isn't here but wasn't here the last time he won too so we might keep him away next time!. These winners are hard to come by so we treasure them we they do come and I'll have five or six horses for the summer. Most of my owners are locals and this is the second nearest track from my base in Bandon but I'd absolutely welcome more.
Sulla completes Killarney double for O'Brien
He did it well but is a bit lazy and the blinkers seemed to sharpen him up a bit. He has been running very well in some very good races and was second to Debuchet so has the form. We'll see how he is after that and decide where he goes next but there's no real plan.
