Outsider wins Naas' opener
he did it well for the first time over hurdles and jumped well; it wasn’t a bad maiden hurdle and you never get a bad maiden hurdle at Naas. He ran well here the last day when he led to the furlong pole in a good bumper. He’ll be for sale and will probably go to Brightwells in two weeks time. He’s a horse to look forward to, whoever’s going to be to training him because he’ll stay and stay and stay and will get further. He’s owned by Philip and Nanette Wheatley, from Wicklow, who have four horses with me and the plan with this horse was for him to be sold when he won.
Sutton Place edges Elliott further ahead
I’d say he’s a fair one and you’d like the way he has galloped to the line. He has improved a good bit from last year and has got stronger and he’s a horse for jumping fences down the road. There’s no chance he’ll run in the Newbury race as he’s a horse for next year; I’ll talk to Frank (Berry, owner J.P. McManus’ racing manager). We might keep him at home (instead of going to Cheltenham) but we’ll talk to the lads and see.
Beleaguered Mullins bounces back
I was very pleased with him (Augustin) - he made hard work of it but I think he’ll improve an awful lot for it. I didn’t know he was ready enough to win so to do that on 2m3f on that ground means an Albert Bartlett entry and that’s where he might go. He’ll improve because he has very little done.
Anibale gives Martin grounds for optimism
I was adamant in Kempton that it was just the ground - it was one of those things and I had never seen ground as good at that time of the year. There was nothing wrong with him but today proves it was the ground as he was beaten after three or four fences. Last week (at Leopardstown) it also seemed too good again to take a chance. He always showed he was a decent horse and it was no bad race today. I wouldn’t be too worried about ground as long as it was as yielding as today.
Charlie Stout scores for Nolan/Corbett
he did it well enough in the end - he was entitled to win on the back of his run the last day as the first and second have run well since. He doesn’t mind that ground and he’ll go for something similar next - he’s in at Down Royal on Tuesday just in case but I doubt he’ll run now. He could step up in trip as he stays further.
McManus & Walsh complete Naas trebles
he (Mark Walsh) said he didn’t jump a fence in behind but when he pulled him out he just lit up. I don’t know where we go from here but he wants a bit further.
Chatho wins Naas bumper for Fleming/Connell
he’s a nice horse and he’s going to make a lovely hurdler and chaser. He’s very honest and is a good moving horse. You never get a bad bumper at Naas and we were a little nervous he might have been a bit ring-rusty but he looks to have a lot of ability. He has such a big stride he finds things very easy and we’re delighted for them to start running well again. Barry (Connell) has mentioned the Cheltenham Bumper but we’ll see what he wants to do in the next few weeks.
