Ricky Bobby scores for McCurtin brothers
he was third in Clonmel (in March) but was a little bit disappointing all along. We ran him on the flat the last day and I'd say he came to hand on the better ground today. He'll run away in those kind of races and is a big horse who would like a big galloping track. We'll let him get over this now. He is owned by Ambrose's brother Raymond, from Fermoy.
Well-bred and expensive Heroes finally comes good
It was long overdue as we always thought he was a nice horse, going back to his early days. Unfortunately he had a little blip in between with a problem with a knee and that put him on the sideline,. The ground was probably too heavy for him over the winter and he is a genuine good ground horse and had a lovely run at Listowel the last day, when it was a fact-finding mission to see was he back to where we want him. This looked a nice opportunity. I'll chat with Brian (Acheson, owner) and the plan is to go chasing sooner rather than later and I might have a look at one of the handicap hurdles at Galway.
Troubled winter put in the past as Nibblers clicking into gear in the summer
He had a tough winter when he got a bad dose of laminitis and has suffered for a long time. He needed round-the-clock minding and Louise Williams really saved him and had a special boot for him which took the pressure off. We had to be patient and we were lucky we caught it early,. It has taken us a while to get him fit and his run on the flat really brought him on. I told Brian he'd see it out, as he is lazy and you have to work. He is never going to be flashy but he'll try for you. He will go to Galway for the 2m6f handicap on the Friday - I don't know would he have the speed early-doors for the Galway Hurdle. I'd like to think going forward he could be a horse for Leopardstown at Christmas and the Dublin Racing Festival. we're hovering around 10-12 horses, they're all running solid and one like him makes it easier.
A winning start from Elusive Rain
I bought him at the flat foal sales for E3,500 but he's not a big horse and you wouldn't want to go much more than that for him. We had him ready to run last year but he had a slight setback so we decided to keep him for a bumper,. He goes well at home but the ground was a concern. We'll either go for a flat maiden or a winners' bumper now and he has done plenty of schooling.
