There was little to choose between the pair when the 9-10 favourite came down to leave the Grade Two contest at the mercy of Philip Fenton's charge.
Brian O'Connell was able to bring the 7-1 chance five lengths clear of Across The Bay
"I don't really know what would have happened there but luck was on our side and that's important," said the County Tipperary trainer.
"He has the potential to be a Galway Plate horse. I think the better ground is in his favour and he's won around Galway twice before."
Jagoes Mills' rider Davy Russell had earlier been successful on 2-1 favourite Stonemaster for County Kildare trainer Dessie Hughes in the Meteor Mobile Novice Hurdle.
"He's a progressive horse who would appreciate the better ground, his strong point is his jumping," said Russell.
