Former trainer Willie Fennin has died peacefully at home surrounded by his family following a long illness.

Fennin will be remembered for his association with Athy Spirit which he trained to win eight races in 1990 including the big Amateur GPT Hanicap and Galway Hurdle double at that year's Galway Festival.

Athy Spirit also won at that year's September meeting in Galway and later that year landed the Leopardstown November Handicap when partnered by Dale Gibson.

Fennin's Cardenton Farm in Athy Co. Kildare was the venue for the National Ploughing Championships from 2009 to 2011.

The funeral Mass which takes place this Saturday at 11am in St Michael's Parish Church Athy will be live-streamed on parishofathy.ie

May he rest in peace.
