Jockey Ronan Whelan registered a first winner for trainer Pat Murphy at Dundalk today as Ampeson (100/30f) gained a maiden win at the 16th attempt in the Dundalk Stadium Gift Vouchers Handicap (div I).

Owned by the Newbridge or Nowhere Syndicate, the son of Mayson edged right in the closing stages but held on for a neck win over Hell Left Loose

Murphy later reported “he was off the bridle early and I thought we were in bother but Ronan said he kept picking up and he saw it out well. He said if we step him up to a mile that he might be more comfortable.

“I thought we would get a race out of him on the turf but things just didn’t work out great. Myself and Ronan have been tricking together for a good while but that’s the first winner he’s had with me.”
