Whelan happy to win on gambled-on Abbey After his eye-catching sixth place effort when getting no luck in the run over the course and distance last week, Selskar Abbey justified the faith of those that backed him in from around 6/1 earlier in the day, to his starting price of 9/4 favourite for the Leopardstown Club Members Handicap. Bringing up a double for Jim and Jackie Bolger, after their earlier win with the Brendan Duke-handled Vocal Heir, Selskar Abbey ran out a pretty convincing one length victor over Brog Deas Nua. Winning rider Ronan Whelan acknowledged: "That was badly needed. "Just looking at his last run he was entitled to come here and do that. Sometimes though you'd have it in the back of your head that when they get a bit hampered and run home like that, it can sometimes flatter them. "In fairness everything was going for him today and if he was ever going to win it was tonight. "It's not easy, in fairness, only for my boss (Mr Bolger), he's been there for me. I haven't been having many winners but he's been giving me rides. I'm just grateful to get that. At this stage if I can get one I'll take it." (GC & EM)
