Viceregent bridges long losing gap without a win Viceregent, runner-up in first-time cheek pieces at the Listowel Festival last month, went one better in division one of the Pimlico Racing Happy Retirement Zoffany Bay Handicap at Navan. The Charles Byrnes-trained gelding, who gained his only previous success for Richard Fahey over three years ago, has been placed both over hurdles and on the Flat this year and was well-supported on track from 6/1 into 4/1. Jazzy Rock travelled well to lead two furlongs out in this 1m6f event but was collared about 100 yards out by Viceregent who went on to beat that rival by half-a-length. Rain finished best of all a further length and a half back in third with Global Export completing the places in fourth. Winning rider Adam Caffrey said, "He's answered every call. I was closer than I expected to be, but he travelled so well that I didn't want to disappoint him. "He quickened up down the hill and he has picked them off one by one. He has won well at the line, going away. "He needed every yard of the trip and the ground was ideal." Quotes by Michael Graham
