Vega proves Magnifico in Navan finale Vega Magnifico looks a name to note after opening his account in decisive fashion in the Summer Ladies Day May 28th Maiden at Navan. The Joseph O’Brien-trained colt was sent to the front well over a furlong out by Dylan Browne McMonagle and soon put the 1m2f event to bed. The 15/2 chance kept on strongly up the hill to score by three and a quarter lengths, with Newfoundland keeping on into second and another Ballydoyle representative Cougar (13/8fav) in third. O'Brien's assistant Brendan Powell said, "He was very immature last year with his run. His first run this year he just needed it and has come on for it, mentally more than anything. "I don't know what sort of maiden it was, but he was impressive doing it. I thought Dylan gave him a lovely ride. "He might have been better with somebody to take him a bit further because he looked around in front but I think there is definitely a stakes race in him somewhere. "He's that sort of horse and I can just see him improving throughout the year. He's a massive big horse, lovely action on him. He might want a little bit more cut than this but has coped with it. He's a powerful big colt and he has got loads of ability." (MG & AM)
