On Thursday next, Tony Martin's Tudor City will bid for back-to-back wins in the Galway Hurdle. Also successful in the 2019 running, the 11-year-old would become the first horse to win the prestigious race on three occasions.
Despite his advancing years, the John Breslin owned gelding comes into the 2023 renewal in excellent form, having won the Apprentice Derby at the Curragh on his most recent start.
Jockey Liam McKenna, who enjoyed his biggest success to date when partnering the son of Yeats 12 months ago, feels that the unique test at Galway is a perfect fit for Tudor City.
"It's a race where you have to ride for a lot of luck. The way Tony(Martin) likes his horses ridden, it suits that kind of race," said McKenna.
"Tudor loves the hustle and bustle. If there is half a gap then he will get his head through it and away he'll go."
Last year, McKenna came into the race having his first ride of the season, having been out of action since the Irish National at Fairyhouse. By his own admission, he wouldn't have been in huge demand but a Galway Hurdle winner has certainly boosted his profile.
Already this term, the Tyrone born jockey has ridden five winners for four different trainers.
