Third time lucky for Burgundy Boy Burgundy Boy made it third time lucky in the opener at Roscommon, the Irish Stallion Farms EBF 2yo Maiden. The Sheila Lavery trained son of Red Jazz was fourth on his first two starts, finishing just three and three parts of a length behind Gustav Klimt on his most recent outing eight days ago. Available at 8/1 last night, the grey colt opened on-course at 9/2, touching 5s, before going off a 10/3 chance under Gary Carroll. Having raced in a close second, he was pushed along to lead over two furlongs out, and he kept on well under pressure from there, getting the better of Port Lions by a head. The runner-up was returned the 9/4 favourite (from 9/2) under Shane Foley for Mick Halford, while newcomer Daliyah was a further six lengths away in third. Coat Of Arms was withdrawn after getting loose at the start, while Messerati Kid was withdrawn after getting upset in the stalls.. Lavery said afterwards: "He's owned by my niece Joanne who also works for me. He was bought as a foal but didn't sell as a yearling. "He's big and people think big is going to be backward but he's never been backward. "Gary felt he would be suited by the hill at Galway, so we may look at the mile nursery there. He's not ground dependant and, if he's not sold, we should have a lot of fun with him." STEWARDS REPORTS * The Stewards enquired into an incident in the straight involving Burgundy Boy, ridden by G.F. Carroll, placed first and Port Lions, ridden by S. Foley, placed second. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards made no alteration to the judge's placings and took no further action. * The Stewards informed J.P. Murtagh, trainer that Messerati Kid, would have to be recertified before being declared to run from stalls again. * The Stewards fined Seamus G. O'Donnell, trainer, E350 for lodging a passport in respect of Whiskey Treat, in which the vaccinations did not conform with the provisions of Rule 91. The Stewards allowed the horse to run on receipt of the trainer's written assurance that the vaccinations were in order. * G.F. Carroll, rider of Burgundy Boy trained by Ms. Sheila Lavery, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount hung right in running. Additional reporting by Alan Magee
