The three-runner two mile Qualified Riders race turned into a tactical affair with pace-making favourite The Real Article keeping enough in reserve to fend off Benefit Of Porter
With Akiem and Benefit Of Porter noticeably reluctant to lead, James ‘Corky’ Carroll went to the front on Eddie O’Grady’s 4/9 favourite (11/8 in the morning).
The race didn’t really start until three furlongs out, but Carroll had enough in the tank to kick on again and win by two lengths from Benefit Of Porter (9/4). Outsider of three Akiem (8/1) came home third four lengths away.
The winner was the first of a quick across the card double for Edward O’Grady as Rocco’s Hall scored in the 7.05 at Kilbeggan. O’Grady said: “I’m delighted he won a flat race.
“He’ll probably go for a handicap hurdle at Listowel next but that depends on the ground.
“It’s nice to have another option on the flat.”
Universal Truth was a non runner for Dermot Weld.
