Templeton catches stewards eye In a case that has echoes of The Real Article's controversial second at Tipperary last month, the running and riding of Templeton (beaten a short-head) in the mile and a half maiden at Tramore this evening has been referred on to the Keeper Of The Matchbook. Trained by Ken Condon and ridden by Billy Lee, the Hawk Wing gelding came home well under hands and heels riding to just be denied by Haleniya in the second race (5.45pm). The following is the full text of the stewards enquiry: The Stewards enquired into the running and riding of Templeton, ridden by WJ Lee, and trained by Mr. KJ Condon. Evidence was heard from the rider concerned who stated that the instructions were to settle towards rear on the rail and to creep into the race without getting there too soon. He added that he got a great run throughout and tracked the leader into the straight. He tried to cajole his mount in the latter stages without resorting to the whip as the horse had a tendency to lean outwards under pressure. He concluded that in hindsight maybe he should have used the whip a bit sooner. Evidence was also heard the trainer concerned who confirmed the instructions adding that the horse has a tendency to bleed. He also confirmed his satisfaction with the ride in so far as the rider carried out his instructions. However he was of the opinion that the whip should have been used at an earlier stage. Following the running of the race Templeton was examined by the Turf Club Veterinary Officer at the request of the stewards and was found to be post race normal. Having viewed the video of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards referred the matter to the Keeper Of The Match book for further investigation.
