Golden Spell defied top-weight to run out a convincing winner of the Plusvital Speed Gene Nursery Handicap at the Curragh.

Colin Keane held the 11/4 favourite up towards the rear of the field in the early stages of the six-furlong contest.

The Johnny Murtagh-trained filly came with a sweeping run to lead over a furlong out and stayed on well in the closing stages to record a length-and-a-quarter success from the staying on Navajo Dreamer

Golden Spell was following up her maiden success over five furlongs at Bellewstown ten days ago.

“She's a very game little thing. I thought the handicapper was being harsh on her, giving her 84 before today,” said Keane.

“The step up in trip was ideal for her and she tries very hard for you. I'd say in time she will get an extra furlong.

“We'll see what the handicapper does now but she might have to try to go and get a bit of black-type.”
