Sharjah is set to join one-time stablemate Faugheen in retirement, with the news coming today at Dundalk.
A 15-time winner, Sharjah has won nine races at Dundalk and while his latest success came at the Co Louth venue in July 2018, he has been placed on 17 occasions since, in a 153-race career.
Irish-bred and by Shamardal, Sharjah ran for the first time for current trainer Andy Slattery in 2012, the same year the Co Tipperary based handler sent Faugheen to win a Ballysteen point-to-point.
Today Slattery stated “we are thinking of retiring him, he is 12 after Christmas and I have a girl up the north who is ready to take him and do dressage with him. He'll have a good life after racing.
“We were ready to retire him a few times already but he came out and nearly won but that is the plan.
“He never gave a lame step in his life and gets on with it and does it.”
