Safety Report Published

A rise in the minimum weight for both Flat and National Hunt racing was one of a number of recommendations in the Turf Club´s Safety Review Group Report issued yesterday.

The minimum weight on the Flat is to be increased by 2lb to 8st, while the jumps figure is up 3lb to 9st10lb. The changes could be made within the next month, while the minimum weight in patern races, as well as auction and claiming events, is to be not less than 8st5lb.

Other main points include an indepth review of helmet design, a schooling certificate for first-time jumpers, tightening up of parade ring safety and dehydrated riders to be stood down for at least 48 hours.

The Safety Review Group was set up following the tragic deaths of Kieran Kelly and Sean Cleary last year.
