There was a heart-breaking defeat for the young jockey Darren Egan on Judge 'N Jury in the Group 3 Woodies D.I.Y. Sapphire Stakes as he was beaten on the line by the heavily-backed favourite Definightly (from around 3/1 this morning into 13/8) under Johnny Murtagh (a double for the Meath man after his win on Sharestan earlier) at the Curragh.
Egan's mount drifted pretty badly to his right in the final furlong when in front and this proved crucial as Definightly rattled home to get up and prevail by half a length.
Winning trainer Roger Charlton wasn't present for this victory and it was left to Murtagh to comment: "The one in front quickened up very well but my lad battled well. It's tough going out there, I wasn't even sure if I was up as the other fella was a bit away from me. I knew I had hit the line well though."
The Stewards enquired into possible interference in the final furlong involving Mirza ridden by FM Berry, placed sixth, Secret Witness ridden by Luke Morris, placed fourth and Katla ridden by WJ Lee, placed third, where it appeared interference had taken place. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned.
Having viewed a recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards made no alteration to the judge’s placings, however both WJ Lee and Luke Morris were found to be in breach of Rule 214 in that they had ridden carelessly and having taken their records into account, suspended them for one race day. Furthermore they were advised regarding the accuracy of their evidence.
