The Eric McNamara-trained Raw Ability recorded a 40/1 shock when making a successful debut in the opening Winton Fillies Maiden at Gowran Park this afternoon.

The market for this 14-runner mile event was dominated by Quatrain (11/10) and Settlement (6/5) but bookmakers got a real result.

Not many got involved at the business end as Quatrain headed Settlement under two furlongs from home but Raw Ability finished best of all under Shane Foley.

The daughter of Belardo kept on strongly in the closing stages to beat Quatrain by a length and a quarter, with Settlement three and a quarter lengths further back in third.

Foley said, “In fairness the lads said that she was ready to start. She travelled through the race really well, picked up down at the furlong pole and stayed going.

“I could barely pull her up and there’s loads of improvement in her as well. I’d say she’s a bit better than a maiden.”
