Benbecula (15/8 into 6/4), the ninth horse to represent Johnny Murtagh as a trainer, got the job done as a well-backed favourite in the August Festival 15th to 18th Rated Race at Tramore.
It was only a week ago that Murtagh's career as a handler officially began and here Ben Curtis made all on Benbecula, the Motivator (2005 Derby hero) gelding staying on well in the final furlong to account for Lady Imola by six lengths.
Curtis explained: "He won well and he's been very consistent. He handled the ground and the track.
"He's a grand horse for the future over hurdles. It's great to get a winner for Johnny – his first.
"I ride out for him every morning."
Murtagh afterwards tweeted: "Delighted to get off the mark. Thanks to all involved."
Valerie Keatley representing the yard, revealed: "The ground made a big difference and hopefully that's the first of many. Tommy (Carmody, original holder of the licence) is still on the team. He's there every morning too." Traveller's Tales slipped up going down into the dip. Jockey Andrew Thornton and the horse were okay afterwards. (DM & EM)
