Entropy and Hale Bopp dominated the betting for the four-runner Bordeaux Racecourse Rated Race, but it was Mudamer who came out on top, providing Kevin Prendergast with his third winner within the last week.
Successful on his second start as a juvenile, the Dark Angel colt had been disappointing of late and was sent off a 13/2 chance this evening.
Settled behind the market principals in third, he was switched out to challenge from the two furlong pole and was ridden to the front inside the final 200 yards.
Soon pressed by 16/1 chance Desert Wind he kept on well close home to prevail by half-a-length under Chris Hayes in the Shadwell silks.
Entropy, who was returned the 6/5 favourite, had no excuses in third, while Hale Bopp (5/4 from 10/3 early) trailed home in rear.
"That was my first time riding him and we thought a lot of him as a two-year-old but he had a couple of hold-ups," Hayes said.
"He disappointed a little this year but it worked out well today and it will do his confidence the world of good.
"It is great to get a winner for the boss, and I'm very grateful for Angus (Gold, racing manager) and Sheikha Hissa (Hamdan Al Maktoum) for giving me the call up."
Prendergast registered his first winner of the season at Tramore on Saturday before quickly doubling his tally at the Graun Hill venue.
STEWARDS REPORTS
The Stewards enquired into an incident in the final furlong involving Entropy, ridden by J. Coen, and Hale Bopp, ridden by M.A. Enright where it appeared Hale Bopp ran short of room on the inner. Evidence was heard from the riders concerned. J. Coen gave his evidence in the presence of Ms. E. O'Farrell and stated that his mount was staying straight until coming to the dogleg when his mount rolled to the rail. M.A. Enright stated that the horse on his outer rolled in, came across his mount and he met with interference. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards found J. Coen in breach of Rule 214 in that he had ridden carelessly and having taken his record into account cautioned the rider on this occasion.
M.A. Enright, rider of Hale Bopp trained by G.M.Lyons, reported to the Clerk of the Scales that his mount got tight for room close to the finish.
The Stewards requested a report from Kevin Prendergast, trainer as to the apparent improvement in form of Mudamer, placed first, as compared with its recent form. The trainer's representative Mr. J.C. Harley reported to the Stewards that this horse was badly drawn at Galway last time and did not handle the track. Having considered the evidence the Stewards noted the explanation offered.
