Review PUNCHESTOWN 18TH OCT

Coolgreaney was gifted victory in the Visa International Asia Pacific Novice Chase at Punchestown on Thursday as Montana Bay crashed out at the last.

Michael O'Brien's charge looked set to run out an easy winner of the Grade 3 contest, before clipping the final fence and taking a heavy fall.

Ruby Walsh was in the right place at the right time aboard Coolgreaney, who was left to come home a 12-length winner over Medicinal.

'It's like the old adage - if you're not in you won't win!' said winning trainer Sean Treacy. 'She was lucky at the last, definitely, as the horse in front looked the winner.'

'The plan was to ride for third and get some black-type and anything else was a bonus - that's how it worked out. We would have been delighted with second but she's a Grade 3 chase winner now and that will do a nice bit for her in the paddocks.'

Blazing Sky proved different class to her rivals in the Listed mares hurdle, cantering to a seven-length success.

Paddy Flood sent the 8/13f to the lead four out and she pulled clear turning for home to win as she liked.

'It wasn't as good a race as last year and it was a bit easier for her,' said trainer Frank McGuinness. 'She had muscle problems all last year but we put her out for the summer and she came back right.

'If she comes out of that well we could go to Down Royal for a mares contest there while I would love to go to Cheltenham for the new mares race, but that is a long way off.'

The opening maiden hurdle looked a hot contest and Captain Cee Bee emerged victorious after a good duel with Meadow Vale.

The pair fought it out from the last with Eddie Harty's charge always just holding sway, under Andrew McNamara, for a three-parts verdict. Strongly supported favourite Jered (2/1 to 6/4) was back in third.

'We've always liked him and he won well (on the Flat) down in Killarney. JP has bought him since and it's nice to win first time out for him,' said Harty.

'We'll talk to Frank (Berry) and JP and see what way they want to go. He loves that ground. We'll keep him on the go and see what the weather brings.'

Santa's Son produced a game front-running performance to make a winning debut over fences in the beginners chase.

John Cullen's mount jumped well to see off the challenge of Badgerlaw by four-and-a-half lengths.

'He'll probably go handicapping as he might just be a bit short of the top novices,' said trainer John O'Shea.

'I would hope that there's a big handicap in him, maybe a Paddy Power or Thyestes. It might not be this year but at some point.'

Limerick handler Carl Dore led in his first winner 'on the track' when Risky Beauty battled gamely to land the amateur handicap chase under Roger Quinlan.

The Philip Rothwell-trained Silver Adonis proved a cosy winner of the handicap hurdle when scoring by two lengths under David Casey.
