The Emo Oil Champion Hurdle produced a magical result at Punchestown today where Conor O'Dwyer and Hardy Eustace again outbattled English challenger Rooster Booster to make their way home in front of packed stands and through a wall of noise.
Dessie Hughes' 3/1 winner received an excellent reception in the winner's enclosure with the runner-up receiving a sympathetic cheer from the appreciative crowd.
In the race itself, Hardy Eustace came under pressure four hurdles from home but received an intelligent ride from O'Dwyer who drove the gelding to the front soon after.
Rooster Booster looked a big threat from the home turn but Hardy Eustace battled gamely with O'Dwyer later reporting 'he was idling a bit during the race but is so tough it's unbelievable!'
Hughes added 'the track was our only concern because we thought it might not be stiff enough. He is a lazy horse but Conor rode a superb race.'
O'Dwyer earlier landed the handicap chase on Junior Fontaine while Hughes later completed a double with Liscannor Lad, under Paddy Flood, in the novice handicap chase. According to Hughes the winner will be aimed at the Galway Plate.
Sadly, favourite Rosslea was put down after injuring his shoulder in a fall during the race.
The Grade 1 Champion Novices' Hurdle was won by Willie Mullins' Sadlers Wings under Ruby Walsh. According to Mullins 'Sadlers Wings may be a Champion Hurdle horse next year. He stays, has plenty gears and jumps well. He's another one to dream about!'
Mullins' completed a double when Major Vernon won the bumper in the very capable hands of Jamie Codd.
21st birthday presents do not come much better than the one jockey Andrew McNamara received following his win on Take Aim in the Ladies' Cup. Gerry O'Neill's mare raced prominently over the banks course and was driven clear from two out to win by four lengths.
Afterwards O'Neill stated 'I finished second in the La Touche as a jockey but it is brilliant to win it as a trainer. Andrew gave her a great ride.'
