Review GOWRAN PARK 7TH MAY

Galatee ran out a convincing winner of the Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes at Gowran Park on Sunday.

Jim Bolger's filly made it two wins from two starts when staying on stoutly in the closing stages of the Listed contest after a scorching early gallop.

The well-backed Fermion (7/1 to 3/1) went to the front after a few furlongs and set a strong pace. She was closely tracked by Galatee and Kevin Manning sent the 11/4f into the lead turning for home.

She kept on well in the straight to comfortably hold the late challenge of Helena Molony by two lengths.

The Blue Wind Stakes at Naas on May 17th is next on the agenda for the daughter of Galileo while the Irish Oaks could be a long term target for the filly.

Poseidon Adventure looked the Ballydoyle second string, in the PricewaterhouseCoopers Classic Trial, but ran out a comfortable winner.

The son of Sadler's Wells cruised into the lead, under Colm O'Donoghue, early in the straight and despite running around in the closing stages he went on to beat Royal Intrigue by three lengths.

Aidan O'Brien completed a quick double when River Tiber made a winning return to action in the Thomastown Maiden.

Seamus Heffernan sent the 8/13f to the lead at the furlong pole and he kept on nicely to see off the challenge of Film Festival by a length-and-a-half.

Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen combined to record a quick double in the first two races with newcomers Blackberry Boy and Nasharaat.

Yario (2/5f) was a warm order in the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden but found Blackberry Boy three-parts-of-a-length too strong in the closing stages.

Nasharaat also denied a hot favourite when leading close home, despite drifting right, to beat Diyla (11/10f) by three-parts-of-a-length in the Fillies Maiden.

Peineve finished with a wet sail to deny Regaleya by the narrowest of margins in the Fillies Handicap while Grisham held on by a short-head from Rockazar in the Kilkenny Handicap.

The feature event at Killarney was claimed in great style by Brogella as she ran out a facile winner of the Murphys Irish Stout Handicap Hurdle.

Tony McCoy partnered his first winner at the course when scoring on Poc Fada in the Gleneagle Hotel Handicap Chase while Artiste Bay caused a shock in the opening Killarney Towers Hotel Maiden Hurdle when getting the better of 4/7 shot Breathing Fire.
