Review GALWAY 4TH AUG

The victory of Lorli in the E70,000 Vodafone Ferrari Handicap was the highlight of a 125/1 double for jockey Wayne Smith as another record-breaking Galway festival came to a close.

Senators Alibi looked sure to score when looming up on the outside early in the straight in the 7f feature, but Smith's mount would not be denied and battled back to score by a neck.

'She's a lovely filly who has kept improving since she came to me, and is very easy to train,' said Sean Treacy of one of the most valuable successes of his training career.

Smith's immediately followed up in the Western Cellular Rated Race aboard Camargue, who in winning became the third horse to score twice at the week-long fixture.

First-season trainer Mark Loughnane's import also earned his rider the leading flat jockey award with a gutsy 1L defeat of the wayward Niallon.

Wouldn't You Agree had earlier matched Camargue's feat with a very easy success in the Free Voicemail Maiden Hurdle.

The well-backed 11/10 favourite, who landed the bumper on the opening evening, saw off Gemini Guest by 4 1/2 lengths under a confident ride from Paul Moloney.

Owner JP McManus' racing manager Frank Berry afterwards described the half-brother to Hardiman as 'a nice horse, who won't be over-raced this year'.

Val O'Brien was on the mark in the valuable GPRS Handicap Hurdle for the second year running as Gatso took the ultra-competitive contest in great style under Ruby Walsh.

Formerly trained by Austin Leahy, the eight year-old was having only his second outing for the local handler, and was targetted at the race on jockey Walsh's recommendation.

The former champion, surprisingly partnering his first winner of the festival, drove his mount home 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Teknash, who just touched off favourite Its The Boss for second.

A nasty melee inside the final furlong overshadowed a good performance from Samawi in the Ready To Go Handicap.

Dermot Kelly's charge looked to have taken the measure of In The Gods when that rival stumbled and took a heavy fall, bringing down Turn Of Phrase and Alquid Novi.

The latter's rider Rachel Costello was taken to hospital with a suspected shoulder injury, while Tom Queally gave up his remaining rides after hurting his knee.

To add insult to injury so to speak, Queally was also given a three-day careless riding suspension for his role in the incident.
