Review FAIRYHOUSE 31-MAY-2000

Damian Oliver partnered his first winner in Europe when Simplicity made a successful debut in the 12f maiden.

Oliver (27), five times champion rider in Melbourne, sent the Noel Meade-trained filly to the front over a furlong out to beat Lily's Choice by 3L.

Meade, the leading National Hunt trainer, was completing a double on this sadly low-key end to the jumping season as Fnan justified prohibitive odds in the novice hurdle.

The 1/6 chance made most and, despite jumping to the left at the final three hurdles, kept on under Paul Carberry to beat Defence Forces by 3L.

'He will be better over 2 1/2m and on faster grounnd. We will race him in novice hurdles through the summer, and bring him back the following spring,' said Meade.

Presentations were made in the parade ring to Meade, as well as champion jockey (Barry Geraghty) and leading claimer (Philip Carberry).

Crystal Springs was produced with a well-timed challenge by Shane McCann in the 3m handicap hurdle, leading after the last to beat Felicity's Pride by 2L.

McCann will be part of the Irish jump jockeys team on the annual trip to Australia in August, where he will be accompanied by Philip Carberry, Shane McGovern and Barry Cash.

Michael Kinane struck the front in the Flat jockeys title race when completing a double aboard Bonnard and Impulsif to move onto the 25 winner mark.

Bonnard just held the renewed late surge of fellow newcomer America Calling in the 2yo maiden, the pair stretching 9L clear of the remainder.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained Nureyev colt returned to the winners enclosure with a bloody mouth, the result of rearing up in the starting stalls.

Kinane successfully teamed up with former mentor Liam Browne in division 1 of the 7f handicap where Impulsif readily justified 2/1 favouritism by 1 1/2L from Ciara Flyer.

Eljamil (10/1, paid #43.40 on the Tote) quickened up under pressure inside the final furlong to land division 2, and will turn out again at Leopardstown next month.

Sunny Slope led on the far rail 1/4m out in the 9f handicap but needed to be driven out by Colm O'Donoghue to hold Delirious Tantrum by a head.

Gold Chaser (5/4-7/4f) could never get on terms with the leaders (finished 12th), and was found to be distressed post-race.
