Review DOWNPATRICK 13TH DEC

With only his sixth runner on the track, Co. Meath-based Richard Walker sent out his first winner when Barker made all under Martin Mooney in the opening maiden hurdle.

Having his first outing over flights after three attempts in bumpers, the grey son of Mister Mat did not go unbacked being returned a 10/1 chance after being available at 16/1 in the morning.

Northern Ireland has been a happy hunting ground for Walker. He trained Loughshane, also in the colours of Eamon Duignan, to score in a point to point at Loughanmore back in February.

Killenaule Boy and Alexander Mobile were put in as joint favourites in early trading for division two of the maiden hurdle but punters wanted the former and were proved correct.

Edward O'Grady's 11/10 market-leader led before three out, he was ridden clear by Paddy Flood after the last to come home an easy 13L winner over Shuffleupandeal.

Mervyn Torrens from Omagh saddled The Duck to create a 33/1 shock at the corresponding meeting in 2005 and he was on the mark again with Bella's Bailey's in the 2m 2f h'cap hurdle.

Ridden by Steven Clements from Scarva, this daughter of Zaffaran, not surprisingly showed staying power in abundance to lead in the final 150 yards, drawing away to win by 7L.

For Clements it was a second win in the plate. He rode his father, Jim's Just In Time to take a Perth h'cap hurdle in August 2005 at odds of 25/1.

Three days ago at Cork, The Dashing Doctor made a reasonably encouraging h'cap debut on his return from a break when finishing in mid-division behind Condara.

Trainer Andrew McNamara suggested that the two mile distance at Mallow was too short and that the two mile six of division one of the Killultagh Properties Handicap Hurdle suited well.

Under Andrew McNamara jnr, the Dr Massini gelding came home 14L in front. 'Hopefully the handicapper won't be too hard on him and he'll go to Limerick at Christmas,' commented McNamara snr.

Trained by James Keegan at his East Hill Stud in Gorey up until recently, Herculies made his first start for Jessica Harrington a winning one in the second divide of that contest.

In the hands of Andrew Leigh, the son of Flemensfirth was ridden clear from before the last and kept on well to go away and beat Sapient by 18L.

Noel Meade was successful with a Clarinbridge, Co. Galway-owned ex-winning point-to-pointer when Bridge Run was triumphant in October and it was a case of more of the same here.

Clarnazar was victorious between the flags when handled by Johnny Niland for a group of hurlers from the aforementioned village at Sligo last May.

On his initial attempt for Meade, on his racecourse bow with Jason McKeown up, the 4yo got the better of a battle with So Many Questions, going away from before the straight.

Clerk of the course, Iain Hamilton received a kick from a horse in the parade ring before the first and after getting two stitches in his knee, he gave up that role for the remainder of the meeting.

Lorcan Wyer took over as clerk of the course. Meanwhile Hamilton resumed as the clerk of the scales. In other news a couple of jockeys were in trouble.

Shane Jackson got a 2 day ban for misuse of the whip and for breaching the start on Condara. Andrew Kinirons was fined E200 for the latter offence on Lucky Spirit.
