Review CURRAGH 19TH AUG

Aidan O'Brien and Michael Kinane teamed up for a Group race double at headquarters with Bach and Hawkeye.

Bach, declared this morning for the Juddmonte International Stakes at York on Tuesday, is 'unlikely to run' after a hard-earned 1/2L victory over Jammaal in the Group 2 Royal Whip Stakes.

'I would not rule him out completely from York, but it is unlikely', said O'Brien, who nominated the Atto Mile at Woodbine in Canada next month as a possible stepping stone towards the Breeders Cup.

Hawkeye led home a 1-2 for Ballydoyle in the Group 3 Desmond Stakes, leading a furlong out to beat stable-companion Pebble Island by 1L.

'Mick felt he was labouring on the ground', said O'Brien before adding, 'There is no doubt he is a miler, and the plan is to go for the Group 1 Prix du Moulin at Longchamp in three weeks time'.

Kinane later completed a treble when bringing Moonbi Ridge from last to first in the 12f conditions race.

Indeed the former champion went close to a four-timer as Veronica Cooper was only touched off in the final strides of the 1m6f handicap by American Gothic (Fran Berry).

Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen were also in double form, combining for an 8/1 brace with the Bert Firestone-owned juvenile fillies Saranac Lake and Rum Charger.

Saranac Lake just held on by a head from the strong-finishing newcomer Quarter Moon in the Group 3 Debutante Stakes.

'This is a major day for a great owner', said the Rosewell House trainer, who continued, 'It was a good performance by a genuine, tough filly'.

'What you see is what you get with her. She seems equally effective on fast or soft ground, and we will probably put her away now until next year'.

Weld is already looking forward to next year's Irish 1,000 Guineas as the winner's dam, Lake Champlain, was runner-up in the classic to Sonic Lady in 1986.

Rum Charger also sported the famous green and white Firestone silks when stretching clear over a furlong out to beat Salentino by 7L in the 2yo maiden.

'She was unlucky in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot where she was the meat in the sandwich. We gave her a break after that run, and will give her one more outing this season', said Weld.

He added: 'The C L Weld Park Stakes is a logical race to go for. She's smart, and is improving'.

Michael Halford maintained his rich vein of form when Exceptional Paddy quickened well a furlong out under Tadhg O'Shea to beat Tender Cove by 1 1/2L in the 6f handicap.
