Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen maintained their winning run when combining for a short-priced double at Cork yesterday, highlighted by the victory of Caumshinaun in the Listed Turtle Island Platinum Stakes.
Caumshinaun stretched clear over a furlong out to beat Avorado by three lengths, and Weld's mother Gita, who owns the four-year-old, was on hand to lead her back into the winners enclosure.
'She has put up some great performances this year, and deserves some black type. She is in foal to Mujadil, and that is definitely her last run', said Weld.
Whistle Down, the seventh individual two-year-old winner for Rosewell House in the past two and a half weeks, justified favouritism in the Danehill Dancer Maiden. However the son of Danehill needed a strong drive by the reigning champion to touch off market rival Toreador by a short-head.
'The first two are good colts', commented Weld after the pair stretched clear of the remainder, before adding: 'He's not too big, but is very tough and game. He will now go for a Listed race'.
Pat Flynn is considering stepping Wacky Sport up further in distance after the Tom Queally-ridden colt cruising home for a facile three lengths verdict over Battle Cruiser in the ten furlongs Bluebird Handicap.
Bansha handler Danny O'Connell enjoyed a welcome change of fortune when Ennoble led before two out under Barry Geraghty to land the Flemensfirth Handicap Hurdle, while the Eddie Ahern-ridden Rumours Abound led inside the final furlong to beat Dame Portia by three quarters of a length in the Second Empire EBF Fillies Handicap.
