Review BELLEWSTOWN 5-JUL-2000

Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen teamed up for a 71/1 double with Indian Mystery and Copper Express on the opening evening of the three-day Festival meeting.

Smullen was seen at his best aboard Indian Mystery in the Maurice McAuley Memorial Maiden, giving the Indian Ridge filly a powerful drive on the far rail to hold off Gold Seeker by a shorthead.

The former dual apprentice champion moved onto the 33 winner mark - seven behind Mick Kinane in the title race - aboard Copper Express in the Murphy Sand And Gravel Maiden. Smullen was again seen to good effect here as the American bred wore down Alexander Eliott in the final 100 yards to score by a head.

The jackpot pool of #5,127 is carried forward to this evening's meeting following a number of surprise results, notably the victory of Goldenhalo in the Oldbridge Concrete Handicap over a mile and three quarters. The Frances Crowley-trained gelding was hard ridden by Colm O'Donoghue to lead over two furlongs out and, despite swishing her tail, held the staying on Adari by a neck.

'He needs a trip, and I will probably step him up to two miles,' said Ms Crowley, who added: 'He could make a juvenile hurdler.'
