Lesser fancied Curly wins Cork opener The opening race on the revised seven race card at Cork this afternoon, the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden, went to the lesser fancied of the two David Wachman trained runners, Curly Wee. Three Sea Captains was sent off the 3/10 favourite for the six furlong contest under Wachman's stable jockey Wayne Lordan. However he was boxed in on the rails coming up the home straight, and when he eventually got out it was too little too late as the winner had gone on under Fran Berry. Returned at 3/1, the winning daughter of Excellent Art ran well on her debut at Naas behind the impressive Vitzoria and came on from that run to score today by a length and three parts. The Jim Bolger trained newcomer Leargas (16/1) just held off staying on Three Sea Captains by a nose for second. Winning trainer David Wachman said afterwards: "That was good. She is a nice filly and we will step her up in class next to a Listed race at the Curragh towards the end of the month." When asked about the disappointing odds-on favourite Wachman added: "They hacked and then sprinted and everywhere he went he was caught for room. When he got going the winner was gone. He would probably be better on better ground."
