The Gerry Keane-trained Mephisto got on top in the closing stages to claim the spoils in the two-mile handicap at Dundalk.

Colin Keane was on board for his father and produced the 5/1 shot to challenge Fenomeno passing the two pole.

Mephisto gained a narrow advantage inside the final furlong and asserted close home for a length-and-a-quarter victory.

The Kendargent gelding had won over course and distance in January and was runner-up on his most recent visit last month.

Keane senior said: "He's getting to like it (trip) now alright, it took us a long time to find it!

"You think he is plenty fast enough for a mile and two at home, but this trip and the track seems to have made the difference.

"Fair play to the owners for persevering because if he had headed off somewhere, I wouldn't have held it against them.

"He has turned the corner now and he seems to love it here.

"He'll go back hurdling as well on good ground. We have a few options with him. He's a summer horse I'd say.

"He's having plenty of breaks between runs.

"We never let a horse pass him up the hill, we are only finding out about him now. He's sweet as a nut at the minute. If you work him at home and the other horse takes him on, he will sulk."
