Kalico gets off the mark on 23rd career start The John Ryan trained Kalico Kalista recorded her first win on her twenty-third career start as she sprang a 14/1 surprise in the Feale Handicap Chase. Settled in mid-division early on she improved into a closer third with a circuit to race. She went second after six out and hit the front with three fences to jump. She went a few lengths clear after the second last and never came off the bridle as she went on to score by four and three parts of a length under Danny Mullins. Curragh Golan was sent off the 2/1 favourite (from 3's this morning) and he finished second under Paul Townend for Garrett Power while the front-running Toomdeely (11/2 from 12's this morning) was a further eight and a half lengths back in third under Phillip Enright for Pat Neville. Wrong Turn, who was the 2/1 favourite last night, was friendless with punters and went off at 10/1. He finished a well-beaten sixth under Denis O'Regan for Tony Martin. John Ryan said afterwards: "Heavy ground appears to be the key to her and she also had an operation on her palate that has worked. "She will run in all those mares races and hopefully we can get her some black type. Danny gave her a brilliant ride." STEWARDS REPORTS * P. Townend, rider of Curragh Golan trained by Garrett James Power, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount did not act on the ground. * D.E.Fitzgerald, trainer of Stonehall Jack, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his charge did not act on the ground and was therefore pulled up.
