The Ado McGuinness-trained Island Affair pounced late to land the spoils in the opening claiming race at Leopardstown this evening. Ballot Box disputed the early pace in the seven-furlong contest along with Brian's Bride and looked to have matters in control when asserting over a furlong from home.
The 13/8 favourite appeared to idle inside the final furlong, however, and Rory Cleary got a good tune from Island Affair in the closing stages to get her head in front close home for a head victory.
Debutant Muizenberg Rock also stayed on well to get within a head of the front pair.
The winner had run two solid races previous to her win tonight, finishing fifth on her debut at this track and fourth at Fairyhouse last time.
"Rory said he was either going to be a hero or a villain. He was dropping her out to get her settled and they sort of tied up a bit in front but she stayed on well. We'll try and sell her if we can,” said McGuinness.
"Eamonn Reilly bought her for us in Tatts last year for 5 grand, and she's repaid us thank god. The only thing is I'll have to give some of this money to the wife (Hazel, part owner)!
"I'd be struggling without these claimers. It gives you a good chance."
There were no claims for any horse in the race.
