We had thunder in the area, the favourite Sayo slipped up before the straight, and a lively feature, the Listowel Printing Works Handicap, eventually went to 4/1 second market choice Baron Samedi
A fourth win-in-a-row for the highly progressive Joseph O’Brien-trained three-year-old, Dylan Browne McMonagle has been in the saddle for three of these.
The wandering Bashiyr (2nd) hampered the fourth, Melburnian a furlong out, necessitating a steward’s enquiry. There was no alteration to the judge’s placings.
Keeping out of the major trouble down the outer Baron Samedi stayed on powerfully to defeat Bashiyr by three parts of a length. Guinevere and Sean Davis parted company when badly hampered by Sayo and Wayne Lordan’s fall (short of room). Thankfully all were reported relatively okay but the riders were taken to hospital for further assessment.
O’Brien representative Brendan Powell said afterwards: “Dylan said he travelled well but then got knocked badly and was pushed about seven wide in the end. What I love about him is he’s very genuine and he’s actually won with his ears pricked in the end.
“I think he’ll stay any trip and he seems to go on any ground. He’s a horse that keeps improving.
“He has a lovely nature and is very kind and relaxed.”
The Stewards enquired into possible interference about one furlong from the finish involving Halimi ridden by L.T. McAteer, placed third, Bashiyr, ridden by M.P. Sheehy, placed second and Melburnian (FR), ridden by N.G. McCullagh, placed fourth, where it appeared that Melburnian (Fr) ran short of room and checked.
Evidence was heard from the riders concerned with M.P. Sheehy giving his evidence in the presence of Michael Mulvany.
Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the Stewards made no alteration to the Judges placings.
They did, however, consider that the interference was caused by M.P. Sheehy riding carelessly, this being a breach of Rule 214. Having taken his previous record into consideration, the Stewards suspended M.P. Sheehy for 2 racedays.
The Stewards intended to enquire into an incident about two and a half furlongs from the finish where Sayo (GB), ridden by W.M. Lordan, fell and Guinevere, ridden by S.P. Davis, unseated rider. As both riders required medical attention, the Stewards were unable to conduct an enquiry and referred the matter to the CEO of the IHRB for further investigation
C.D. Hayes, rider of Great Bear (GB) trained by Thomas Gibney, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount ran a little keen in the first furlong.
D. McMonagle, rider of Baron Samedi (GB) trained by Joseph Patrick O'Brien, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount was badly bumped turning into the straight.
T.P. Madden, rider of Western Boy trained by P.A.Fahy, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount was badly hampered by the fall of Sayo about two and a half furlongs from the finish.
