The Gordon Elliott trained Bayan arrived from what looked an impossible position to win the Leopardstown Club Membership Handicap at Leopardstown today, matching at 999/1 in-running before whizzing past the post, a length and a half clear of the runner-up.
Ridden by capable claimer Luke Dempsey, the son of Danehill Dancer was matched at the ceiling price on a betting exchange for £60, having become badly outpaced half a mile out.
Dempsey's mount eventually hit top gear and in the end beat Stocktons Wing
Elliott was at a Sales and was represented by part owner and Attheraces presenter Gary O'Brien (member of the Core Syndicate) who later stated “I would have been delighted if he had been placed and I'd say the ground going a bit softer probably inconvenienced some of the others.
“I thought he was going to be tailed off half a mile out, but in fairness the last day was the only bad run he's had and the plan now is for the Galway Hurdle and as far as I know Davy Condon will ride him there.”
