The money came for the other Aga Khan runner Sherkali (7/2 into 5/2 favourite) but it was Karasi (4/1) that came to the fore in the finale on 2,000 Guineas day, the New Curragh Handicap.

For Michael Halford and Ronan Whelan Karasi tracked the leader and he got his nose in front inside the final quarter mile.

The Excelebration colt extended his advantage entering the final furlong, keeping on well, but finding himself with a reduced lead close home.

He beat Ferretti and Jupiter Road by three parts of a length and the same.

Meanwhile under Frankie Dettori Sherkali had to settle for sixth.

“I was delighted with his comeback run in Naas. I said to Ronan to jump out and wherever you find yourself to keep it simple,” said Halford.

“He's a very straight-forward horse. He just landed up there and the rest is history.

“It's a real good trip for him and he's very honest. I'd say he's a horse that will improve with racing.

“He has a great constitution and is the easiest laid back horse at home. He wouldn't excite you at home in the morning but he certainly comes alive when he gets here.

“You'd absolutely love him because of that, he just has a wonderful temperament. That's why I think there will be more to come from him.

“The horses have been running great and Ronan is riding very well.”
