Grey Swallow warms up for Guineas

The first main Irish classic trails take place on an eight-race card at Leopardstown on Sunday, and all eyes will be on leading 2,000 Guineas hope Grey Swallow. Dermot Weld puts the finishing touches to the exciting son of Daylami with just a fortnight to go to the Newmarket showpiece.

The Rosewell House trainer successfully used the same prep race for Refuse To Bend last season, and Grey Swallow looks sure to go off at prohibitive odds against five rivals in the Listed Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial Stakes.

The grey colt was very impressive on both outings last season, with wide-margin wins in a Galway maiden and at this venue last October in the Group 3 Killavullan Stakes. He showed a devastating turn of foot to quickly settle the issue at the furlong pole in both races, and should have too much pace for Azamour.

The John Oxx-trained colt also carries a 5lb penalty in this mile event having gained a workmanlike victory in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes at the Curragh last autumn.

Weld may complete a Guineas Trial double in the fillies equivalent with Misty Heights. She will appreciate this drop back in class having got within two lengths of Necklace in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh last year.

The P W McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes has proved a very reliable guide to the Vodafone Derby in recent years, and ante-post favourite Yeats sets out on his three-year-old career against three rivals in this Group 3 contest.

The Sadler´s Wells colt justified a tall home reputation with a smooth win on his only outing to-date at the Curragh, and the Oxx yard provides the chief threat again with Dabiroun.
