The Kevin Prendergast trained Crafty Codger caused a 16/1 upset in the opening Ballymore GAA Christmas Fair & Family Fun Day 3-Y-O Hurdle at Punchestown today, providing another winner for in-focus rider Adrian Heskin.
The son of Mastercraftsman had previously won just once on the flat, at Dundalk, and was mostly unconsidered on this hurdle debut. However Heskin got the gelding into contention before the home turn and from the last stayed on well for a length and a three parts win over Tarabiyn
Afterwards Jeremy Harley, representing Prendergast, stated “the boss is delighted - he's not a big horse but is a great jumper.
“He's probably one of the highest rated of these on the Flat and had schooled very well. Adrian has been up to jump him a few times and he also seems to like that soft ground.”
