Camorra bounced back to form with a vengeance in the Group 2 Comer Group International Curragh Cup to bring up a 428/1 treble for Ger Lyons and Colin Keane. Gear Up was trying a new trip of 1m6f and soon dictated under Dylan Browne McMonagle. He took over from Wordsworth who tracked while Camorra raced in third of the seven runners.
The leader began to crank the pressure up on 85/40 favourite Wordsworth with three furlongs to travel. The favourite was soon niggled along by Ryan Moore to try and stay with Gear Up.
The leader looked to have the favourite beaten over a furlong out, but Camorra was far from done as he improved into second.
Keane rode him to the front a furlong out and he kept on best close home to prevail by a length at 10/1 from the gallant runner-up Gear Up (10/3). Wordsworth kept on again out of the places in third.
Lyons said: “We love this horse and he's one of the yard favourites.
“He's gorgeous physically, he has really matured. He's no good without blinkers.
“He surprised us last summer when he won on Champions Weekend on top of the ground because we always thought he was a soft ground horse, a typical Zoffany. We do okay with our Zoffanys.
“We were sort of protecting him with the Ebor in mind and then this came around.
“The first text I got was from David Spratt and it said 'Melbourne Cup', he just hates Ireland — he just wants to travel!
“We'll tell him to get his visa sorted and go on but he'll be on his own. I'm happy where I am.
“He's done fantastically, I never look at what I'm up against and I knew he'd run well. It's a Group 2 but we don't put them in it just to turn out.
“David and I will discuss plans over the weekend, he's a nice horse.”
Lyons and Keane also passed the post first with Slan Abhaile (11/1) and Mutasarref (9/4f).
