The Aidan Fogarty trained Cabarete recorded his first time career success as he took the Tramore Golf Club Handicap Hurdle in first time cheekpieces.
Second three times in 2014, the five-year-old son of Yeats was disappointing in 2015, and finished tenth of twenty on his return to action at Tipperary last month.
Sent off a 16/1 chance today he was settled in mid-division by Sean Flanagan. He went fourth on the approach to two out, and soon came with his challenge on the outer.
He hit the front shortly after that flight, and kept on well under pressure, going on to score comfortably by five and a half lengths. Gold Class finished second under Jonathan Moore for Robbie Hennessy at 14/1, while the 7/4 favourite (from 5/2 on-course) Cadawill was a neck back in third under Ger Fox for Rodger Sweeney.
Joe Fogarty, father of winning trainer, said afterwards: "We persevered with him. He has two ways of running. He was second a few times starting off, but we couldn’t get him to that pitch again.
"He was schooling well at home and the first time cheekpieces must have done the trick. Maybe he is after taking a turn for the better now.
"This was the plan for him, and I'd say if he didn't run well today he would have went home. His owner (Edward Pakenham) was losing patience with him. Sean gave him a great ride."
