Aidan O'Brien completed a treble in the opening races at Gowran today as his Broadway bagged the Champion Trainer's hat-trick with an all-important win in the Group 3 D.Cordell Lavarack/Lanwades Stud Stakes.
O'Brien's son and stable jockey Donnacha O'Brien had ridden his father's two earlier winners but had sided with brother Joseph O'Brien's Ship Of Dreams in the race as Broadway was steered to her win by Seamie Heffernan.
Racing's greatest impact sub Heffernan produced Broadway to lead inside the final furlong before scoring a half length win over Panstarr
The pedigrees of O'Brien's earlier winners Pink Dogwood (a sister to Irish Derby winner Latrobe) and Circus Maximus (the first foal out of dual Royal Ascot winner Duntle) were arguably eclipsed by Broadway's 'page', as that daughter of Galileo is a half-sister to Prix De l'Arc winner Danedream.
Following her first, crucially important Group 3 win, Aidan O'Brien said “she’s by Galileo and they just seem to get better and better. The more racing they get the better they get. Most horses get tired racing but the Galileo's just get better.
“Seamie thought it was probably her best run, and he felt that she would stay further. We were a little bit worried about the ground but she handled it well.
“She’s a very valuable broodmare and I’d imagine she will go to stud at the end of the year. She could go for the Group 1 mile and a half fillies race (British Champions Fillies' and Mares' Stakes) at Ascot.”
