Sole Power bounced back to his best form to land the betfred.com Temple Stakes at Haydock as the 'Budapest Bullet' Overdose failed to fire.
Keagan Latham was always travelling comfortably on Edward Lynam's Nunthorpe Stakes winner and pounced in the final half a furlong.
The 8-1 shot won by three-quarters of a length from last year's winner Kingsgate Native (7-2), with Prohibit (12-1) third.
Latham said: "They went very quick early on. I got a slight knock out of the gates, but I wasn't too worried.
"They went hard early on and that worked in our favour.
"He picked up very nicely."
Lynam said: "Anyone who thought he fluked the Nunthorpe can think again. "There were the winners of the last four Nunthorpes in that race today and luckily it was our turn, which is the way with sprinters.
"Keagan gave him a lovely ride and I'm delighted the horse has shown the doubters.
"Henry Candy's horse (Markab) had a 7lb penalty and we didn't - that helped.
"We are aware of that and he won't run in Ireland this year as horses carry their penalties for about two years.
"He'll go to the posh place (Royal Ascot) for the King's Stand, but the race we want to win again is the Nunthorpe.
"We want to go back."
Chris Richardson, racing manager for Kingsgate Native's owners, Cheveley Park Stud, said: "We are very happy with that.
"Ryan (Moore) said the draw didn't help him, but it's nice to see the horse back.
"He'll go to Royal Ascot next for either the King's Stand or the Golden Jubilee.
"As six furlongs stretches him just a bit, I would say it would be the King's Stand."
Sky Bet cut the winner to 9-1 from 25s for the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot.
