Approval gets nod in opener Approval Given edged a terrific duel in the opening auction maiden at Bellewstown. Chris Hayes' mount had to pull out all the stops to gain a narrow verdict over 25/1 outsider Wholelotofrosie in the mile contest. The front-runner was joined by Approval Given entering the straight and the pair were locked together in the closing stages. They flashed past the post as one and it was only by a nose that the judge was able to split them. The winner had shaped with promise when fourth on his Leopardstown debut almost two weeks ago. He had been easy to back this morning (5/2 first thing) but was supported on course from 4/1 into 11/4. "I didn't think he had got up from where I was watching but Chris said he always thought he was getting there," said trainer Paul Deegan afterwards. "That was too soft for him and I nearly pulled him out. He's a proper fast ground horse and wants better ground. "He'll get further - he's a big baby. He's very tough and genuine. I really should have put blinkers or cheekpieces on him today. "He could run in nurseries at Dundalk and we'll have a bit of fun with him." (On course reporting by Michael Graham)
