You only had to look at Ruby Walsh's demeanour in the aftermath to see how special a performance Arvika Ligeonniere put up in winning the Grade 1 Ryanair Novice Chase at Punchestown.
Part of a five-timer on the day for Willie Mullins, and four for Ruby Walsh, Arvika Ligeonniere showed his star quality in what truly was championship fare.
The well-backed 7/2 favourite led from four out, he went clear entering the straight and stayed on strongly to beat Oscars Well by nine and a half lengths.
Only five of them finished in this two miler with three pulling up and one unseating rider.
"Soft ground and a right-handed track are two important ingredients and two miles is probably his trip.
"Ruby got him to settle. He's over seventeen hands – he must be the biggest horse in our yard.
"He's just so strong. He's improving and we'll probably play at home with him next year," revealed Mullins in the aftermath. (AM & EM)
