The concluding Borro Mares Flat Race at Wexford was marred by the very serious injury (reportedly a broken knee) sustained by the favourite, Robina Mai with over two furlongs left to run. As with the opening split of this contest, a well-bred first-timer was left to take the spoils as Unaccompanied's half-sister, Wandering Star brought up a Dermot Weld double (won the first with Tuscan Light under Jane Mangan.

In the words of Mangan, "nothing went to plan during the race," but that didn't stop Wandering Star from coming out on top in an usual finish for a bumper these days as the Rosewell representative beat a Kevin Prendergast contender, Katie T by two and a quarter lengths.

Mangan added: "I thought that they went off at a five furlong pace. She's a beautiful filly."

You might associate the stock of the deceased stallion, Verglas, with deep ground, but this grey came around the outside with her bid on this lively surface and she galloped on well having hit the front two furlongs out.

Winning owner, Glen Devlin, from Crossmaglen in County Armagh, commented: "I picked her up at Goffs (for 8,500 Euros in September 2010) and I've been waiting a long time with her. The boss said she'd come home on her own and she did." (DM & EM)
